MHM loves Slim Aarons’ books such as Poolside with Slim Aarons and Slim Aarons by Slim Aarons.

From the boulevards of Hollywood to the beaches of Italy, and ski resorts of Europe of the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s, Aarons chronicled the good life. It is said he made a career out of photographing “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” The books, packed with images of an over the top lifestyle set in magnificent gardens and inspirational homes, are pure escapism.

Aarons worked mainly for society publications both before and after serving as a photographer for the US military magazine Yank during World War II. He is credited for having brought a photojournalist’s eye to the art of formal society portraiture, posing his subjects as still life in magnificent environments. From caftans to deep tans, just flicking through these pages will give you licence to ‘live it large’ in your period home.
